PALESTINE JEWS DRIVEN BY TURKS
Ordered to Leave Colonies Near Front—Thousands Without Bread.
May 17, 1918
Amsterdam, May 16.—The persecution of Jews in Turkish-occupied territory in Palestine is not yet ended, according to the Jewish correspondence bureau at The Hague. Of 4,000 Jews in the city of Safed, near the Sea of Gallilee, 3,000 are without bread. Djemal Pasha, formerly Turkish commander in that district and now minister of war at Constantinople, devised new plans to bring the still remaining Jews to a slow but sure death, according to the bureau.
Since the beginning of April he has ordered all Jews to evacuate colonies and towns near the front. Not a single Jew has been left in the village of Kefr-Saba, northeast of Jaffa. Only Jews were driven out of the village and the remainder of the population was allowed to stay. In Kefr-Saba five or six persons die daily from hunger and typhus.
